The best £300-400 mini laptop is a Samsung NC10 or HP mini 1000 (also sold as the Compaq mini 700). There’s not too much between them; the Samsung has fractionally smaller keys and the HP is lacking in USB ports (but it does include an ‘HP mini mobile drive’ – a USB port for specialised HP memory sticks only – really useful). Both are available for FREE on contracts, the Samsung with O2 and the Compaq mini 700 on Orange and T-Mobile (we recommend the former) for around £30 a month.
