The First Asus Mini Laptop With a 10 inch Screen | The Asus Eee PC 1000

Asus Eee PC 1000

The Asus Eee PC 1000 is the first 10 inch Asus mini laptop and is a direct response to the MSI Wind, the first 10 inch mini laptop ever produced.

Asus, having kick started the netbook market with its Eee PC 701 model has unleashed a flurry of mini laptops into the market, see other Asus Mini Laptops on our Asus review page, with the Eee PC 1000 being their largest model so far.

The First 10 Inch Netbook from Asus.

The Asus Eee PC 1000 is essentially a scaled up Eee PC 901, which itself is a beefed up 900 model. It shares the same arrangement as the 901 and other newer Asus mini laptops with the Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor and features such as built in webcam, microphone and wifi.

Storage varies across the range and on the baseline 1000 model, it comes with 40GB. The ‘1000H’ and ‘1000HD’ models however feature 80GB at more expense.

As an aside it's worth mentioning that Asus offers 20GB of internet storage. So that's not physical storage on the device but space in the cloud, on the internet. It may have some use but with access limited to 5GB downloading per day even if you have a fast connection it's usefulness is likely to be limited. Don't consider this 'storage space' as part of the equation when comparing with other models.

Battery life is excellent with the 6-cell batteries common on the newer Eee PC models. As a result, between 5 and 7 hours battery life are easily possible depending on usage.

The keyboard, Asus claim, is 92% the size of a standard laptop and larger than the smaller Asus mini laptop models. This is the same statement given out by HP with their 2133 mini-note and the vote must go in HP's favour here, that is to say the HPs' keyboard is bigger and more comfortable. The same also goes for the new HP mini 1000 series.

What else can you get for your money? At launch the Asus Eee PC 1000 is relatively expensive for a mini laptop. Not to be bettered by the new Eee PC S101 which retails at roughly 25% more although is certainly a much prettier 10 inch netbook.

Conclusion.

At these prices you are starting to get into cheap laptop territory but bear in mind that the Asus mini laptop (or any other netbook) will always win hands down on portability being smaller and lighter and crucially battery life which is usually severely lacking on low end laptops.

The Eee PC 1000 is a good machine but its expensive and there is fierce competition for the 10 inch crown. Despite the claims of Asus regarding the keyboard there are better keyboards available on other brands. If the price was cut by say 10-15% then it would be easy to recommend but as it is it leaves the door open for other models. Look at the other 10 inch netbooks on the site and then decide based on price.
